韓国の是枝裕和と呼ばれる韓国のインディペンデント映画シーンを代表する監督。長編デビュー作『十八才』(09年)でバンクーバー国際映画祭、ペサロ国際映画祭、ソウル独立映画祭などで受賞し、その後『眠れぬ夜』(12年)は全州国際映画祭大賞および観客賞、エジンバラ映画祭、ナント三大陸映画祭などで受賞。奈良を舞台に撮影した『ひと夏のファンタジア』(14年)は、釜山国際映画祭、ムジュ山里映画祭、韓国評論家協会賞、イタリア・アジアティカ映画祭などで受賞し、韓国独立映画協会の「今年の独立映画」に選ばれる。また、ムジュ山里映画祭プロジェクトである『月が沈む夜』(20年)の共同監督、TVINGオリジナル6部作TVシリーズ「怪異」(22年)を監督、濱口竜介監督の著書「カメラの前で演じること」(22年)の韓国語版出版も手がける。ほかに、映画『5時から7時までのジュヒ』(22年)、釜山国際映画祭開幕作に選ばれた『ケナは韓国が嫌いで』(23年)、アマチュア俳優たちの演技ワークショップを扱った映画『最初の記憶』(23年)など。2025年にはソウル・アリランシネセンターにてチャン・ゴンジェが手がけた短編映画を含む全11編を上映する“チャン・ゴンジェ展”が開催された。

カンヌ、ベルリン、ベネチアなどの主要国際映画祭で作品が上映されてきた、マレーシア映画界を牽引する監督、脚本家、プロデューサー。『Woman on Fire Looks for Water』(09年)がベネチア国際映画祭でプレミア上映されて世界の注目を集める。翌年の『タイガー・ファクトリー』(10年)は、マレーシア映画史上3作目となるカンヌ国際映画祭への選出という快挙を成し遂げ、東京国際映画祭では審査員特別賞を受賞した。近年もその勢いは止まらず、高く評価された長編『ストーン・タートル』(22年)がロカルノ国際映画祭のメインコンペティション部門に選出され、国際映画批評家連盟賞（FIPRESCI賞）を受賞。最新作『The Fox King』は、第50回トロント国際映画祭にてプレミア上映されるなど、常にアジア・インディペンデント映画の最前線を走り続けている。

多様なジャンルを横断し、エンターテインメントに社会的メッセージを融合させることで知られるフィリピンの気鋭監督。わずか21歳で長編デビュー作『Rekorder』(13年)を監督し、バンクーバー国際映画祭で新人監督賞を受賞。高く評価された『バードショット』(16年)は、東京国際映画祭「アジアの未来」部門で作品賞を受賞したほか、米アカデミー賞外国語映画賞のフィリピン代表に選出され、フィリピン映画として初めてNetflixで世界配信されるという歴史的快挙を成し遂げた。その後も、フィリピン初のNetflixオリジナル映画となった強盗スリラー『Dead Kids』(19年)で新たな地平を切り拓き、ホラー映画『Eerie』(19年)やテクノホラー『Deleter』(22年)などの大ヒット作を連発。批評的にも商業的にも、常に現代アジア映画のトップランナーとして圧倒的な存在感を放っている。

フィリピン映画界で最も多作な編集者の一人であり、監督、プロデューサーとしても世界的な注目を集める気鋭のフィルムメーカー。編集を手掛けた短編『A Gentle Night』(17年)は、カンヌ国際映画祭の短編部門でパルムドールを受賞。ほかに、編集作品として『沈黙の自叙伝』(22年)、『Tiger Stripes』(23年)などがある。監督としては、短編『Jodilerks Dela Cruz, Employee of the Month』(17年)がカンヌ国際映画祭の批評家週間部門に選出されたほか、シンガポール国際映画祭で東南アジアベストショートフィルム賞を受賞した。初長編監督作『たとえ嵐が来ないとしても』(21年)は、ロカルノ国際映画祭でワールドプレミア上映され「Cinema e Gioventù Prize」を受賞。同作はトロント国際映画祭でも上映されるなど、現代アジア映画の次代を担う才能として圧倒的な評価を獲得している。また、プロデューサーとして『Cross My Heart and Hope to Die』にも参加している。

Jang Kun-jae is one of the leading directors of the Korean independent film scene, often described as Korea’s Hirokazu Kore-eda. His feature debut Eighteen won the Dragons & Tigers Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival, while Sleepless Night won the Grand Prize and Audience Award at the Jeonju International Film Festival. His third feature A Midsummer’s Fantasia, shot in Nara, received numerous awards in Korea and abroad and was selected as Best Korean Independent Film. He also directed the TVING original series Monstrous, Juhee from 5 to 7, and Because I Hate Korea, which was selected as the opening film of the 2023 Busan International Film Festival. In 2025, a retrospective of his work was held at Arirang Cine Center in Seoul.

Woo Ming Jin is a leading Malaysian film director, writer, and producer whose films have been screened at major festivals including Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. His 2009 film Woman on Fire Looks for Water premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. The following year, The Tiger Factory (2010) became only the third film in Malaysian history to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival and won the Special Jury Mention at the Tokyo International Film Festival. His acclaimed 2022 feature Stone Turtle screened in the Main Competition at the Locarno International Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize. Most recently, his film The Fox King premiered at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival.

Mikhail Red is a prolific Filipino filmmaker known for traversing a variety of genres and combining genre elements with social commentary. He made his feature debut at age 21 with Rekorder (2013), which won him the Best New Director award at the Vancouver International Film Festival. His acclaimed 2016 film Birdshot won Best Film in the Asian Future section at the Tokyo International Film Festival and was the Philippines’ submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. It also marked a historic milestone as the first Filipino film to be released worldwide by Netflix. He continued to break new ground with the 2019 heist film Dead Kids, the first-ever Filipino Netflix original film. Red consistently dominates both critical and commercial landscapes with hit genre films like the horror Eerie (2019) and the techno-horror Deleter (2022).

Carlo Francisco Manatad is a prolific Filipino filmmaker, producer, and one of the most sought-after editors in the Philippines. As an editor, his credits include A Gentle Night (2017), which won the Short Film Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as Autobiography (2022) and Tiger Stripes (2023). As a director, his short film Jodilerks Dela Cruz, Employee of the Month (2017) was selected for La Semaine de la Critique at Cannes and won Best Southeast Asian Short Film at the Singapore International Film Festival. His feature directorial debut, Whether the Weather Is Fine (2021), had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Cinema e Gioventù Prize, and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. As a producer, he has also been involved in distinctive works such as Cross My Heart and Hope to Die, establishing him as a vital and versatile voice in contemporary Southeast Asian cinema.
